Twelve years into our marriage, we struck up a conversation with a couple at a party who assumed we were on a date. When we asked why, they said, “Because you’re so civil with one another.”
It stuck with us because we’d seen the other side in couples we knew. Some were headed for divorce. Others, we suspected, would stay together for life and be unhappy the whole time. Our own marriage had never been like that, and we couldn’t help wondering why theirs were. The difference rarely came down to love. It came down to how they talked to each other, how they handled conflict, whether they agreed on the things that matter most, and the hidden expectations neither of them had ever said out loud. And too many couples waited until it was almost too late to ask for help, because one or both of them felt they didn’t need therapy.
That’s why we started coaching couples more than 20 years ago, and why we do it as a couple, working with a couple. This isn’t therapy, and you don’t have to be struggling to benefit. In every session you get two perspectives from people with 38 years of marriage behind them, who have walked the road you’re on, whether you’re just starting out or years into marriage.
Our approach, the Cudmore Coaching Method, begins with the PREPARE/ENRICH assessment. It shows you where you’re already strong as a couple and where you’ll want to grow. From there, we work together through our workbook, The Journey from ME to WE, covering the conversations that matter most: family background, communication, conflict, money, expectations, intimacy, and parenting.
Between us, we bring two different strengths to every session. Estrella is a Certified Professional Coach with a gift for hearing what’s beneath the words, the feelings and needs a couple hasn’t quite put into language yet. Robert brings a logical, analytical approach that helps couples see the patterns and connect the dots. As a Ramsey Solutions Master Financial Coach, he also ensures the money conversations get real depth, not just a chapter. And we’re both Certified PREPARE/ENRICH Facilitators.
